Design & illustration are considered art, it wasn't until the last 10 years where they became mainly linked with the profitable fields, such as freelancing and making profits online .

Any noob designer starting as a freelancer will tell you this: I won't waste time using pentool if i'm not sure that i'll get paid for it. we all know that, we've all been there. we've most certainly made freelance accounts while Adobe illustrator was 60% in the download task, we've all used open source Freepik vectors and mockups to make our portfolios and price listings.

We know that your handwork must get a payback in return, but before you ask for the cost, you must rate the artistic value of your design: Is the job really worth paying for? I will tell you in this article about. 4 logical and reasonable reasons that will make you design for free from now to till you become a professional.

Free, because you're an artist

A designer who respects art does not consider design as -only- profitable. Painters for example don't draw artistic portraits of people on demand like thirsty Instagram artists nowadays, but they always draw what goes on in their minds: thoughts and feelings. They reflect it on their artistic photos. afterwards he offers his best works for people to see and maybe buy it from him if they appreciate it.

Design and illustration are not much different from painting, therefore we find many professional designers publishing their designs for free in DevianArt, Dribble, Behance, Pinterest and even Freepik, because they see its value as contribute to art not as few dollars.

Your designs are bad

Any entrepreneur will post a new gig saying "I want a logo for my site", will receive more than 30 suggestions, only few minutes after posting the offer. some freelancers won't even read the request at all.

Your designs are very bad, you should search for criticism first before submitting your offers as a "professional logos" to be purchased. you should focus more about boosting your skills, learning new things and keeping in touch with the modern design concepts through visual feeding : Noobs guide to the best Visual Feeding websites that every designer and programmer needs

You do all this for money

We highly respect professional designers who get paid for their work, one logo design or an illustration may cost up to $200 or more. Professionalism, efforts and the included ideas  are the essential elements that worth such a high price.Sadly, these qualities can't be acquired directly after watching a 5-hour YouTube course explaining how to control color hues and opacity , or on how to use the Pentool.

Free because you need a fan base

The most important reason for thinking about offering free designs, is to build a large fan base interested in design and illustration, for your name to be known online. through your shared designs or free open source mokups.
Your reputation and the quality of your work will be the reason for getting offers to you in the future, think of it as a self promotion, you will have the right to set any price you want at the time.
